I have had low self esteem all my life. I have always looked to others to draw from there high self esteem. I have always been a daydreamer. Daydreamers create their own illusions because they cannot accept their present reality. There are positive and negative emotions which the daydreamer draws from. As for me I draw on the positive side. The reason I cannot meditate is I have ringing in both ears because of a head injury. The only time I do not hear it is when I am asleep.

As I understand it one uses either a word or a chant to start a meditation. I focus upon a positive emotion when I daydream. A picture of enjoyment and happiness. I do know some people who has daydreamed have passed the point of rational reasoning and lost their mind. I have never heard of anyone doing that with meditation. Yet we can tell our sub-conscious to tell our conscious to have a quiet sleep and it does. What is our sub-conscious? Paul

Meditation is a means to an end and not the end itself. That end could be achieved through several routes, including meditation. Today's aphorism, in our meditations corner (uppermost left corner) by one of the greatest meditator of all time, Sri Aurobindo appears most timely.

As far as I am aware, no chanting or words ( mantras etc.) are required for meditation. Daydreaming could be a form of meditation for all I know. Those who have been successful in meditation can perhaps enlighten us better in this regard.

And you have company Paul. I am a failed meditator myself.

I can only subjectively answer about the low self esteem, since it is a greater puzzle than merely stating that you can only gain from others esteem. The esteem in which you hold yourself is from not knowing yourself (forgive the bluntness), we know many things and many subjects in this world but what to do with knowing who you really are? This is not an easy road to travel as getting to know who you are will always lead to the inevitable question "What is life", but within that path we can hold regard as to what our insight is upon ourselves. I have to say, that you are already on the right idea with meditation. As meditation can help us delve deeper into who we are as a person, spirit, & being. Since you have a form of Tinnitus “ringing of the ears” (excuse me if this is a wrong prognosis of your symptom, I am not a Doctor), you may want to look into Binaural Tones or Beats, it's a form of resonance frequency that technically can only be heard by each individual ear while having headphones on. Maybe, this might fill the void of the ringing in your ears so you can try a meditation session? Try Theta waves 4-7hz.

As for the daydreamers that have lost rationality during intense day dreaming, this is true. But what you may not know is that it can also happen thru extreme meditation. It's a form of Psychosis that people have termed Jerusalem Syndrome, where a person in deep chanting, mantras, meditation or even visiting a place deemed holy can receive a type of episode where they lose consciousness or even their minds, most often temporarily. There is many speculations as to why this may happen, but I believe that it is due to connecting to a universal force or subconscious state where our body and mind cannot correctly navigate or stand up to the energy or information being received. Kind of like holding on to an electrical wire being grounded versus standing in water or holding on to something that can continue the electrical current (but metaphorically in a spiritual or subconscious sense).

Now for the subconscious, this is YOU. You said that you focus on a positive emotion to do your daydreaming, which is great because that's exactly where you are getting your emotion from, your subconscious. The subconscious is responsible for many more things other than just emotion, but a good way to start is to research what the subconscious is. In this way, you can get your own definition of what it means to you other than just the mechanical parts of the subconscious like automatic movement when you get frightened, hurt, or happy etc. From what I have researched in the past, the subconscious isn't something that responds logically but it can be trained and focused upon. Doing this research I believe will be greatly beneficial to you, and in the end you may find out why you feel the way you do about your esteem and triumphantly gain the ability to meditate even if it is only thru daydreaming! :)

PS: I'm a day dreamer as well, and this is all I thought it was until I found out that what I was really doing was meditating...
