I don't really think of it as bad. In a way, Wain was before his time. In his early years, he was a very popular illustrator of cats before schizophrenia took hold. He is most famous, probably, because of the famous "progression of schizophrenia" pieces that appeared in every series of Time-Life books about mental illness, etc. He had become destitute, but was actually saved by the Crown, who had remembered his early illustrations with fondness. But he definitely fits into the "Henry Darger" category of "outsider art." Even his early illustrations suggest some kind of twisted genius at work.
