A Hurricane, far more powerful than Irene is sweeping across India bringing hope to millions.

A frail looking, short statured 74 year old man called Anna Hazare is about to end his nearly 300 hours of fast. The governement which detained him and put him into prison on 16th August 2011, agreed to his demand of bringing a powerful Anti-Corruption legislation to constitutionally establish an office of Ombudsman to investigae the cases of corruption covering all government servants, all parliamentarians including the Prime Minister. Since the lawmakers are generally perceived by the public to be corrupt, it was like asking them to put a noose around their neck. That they agreed, signifies a great victory of moral force over material considerations.

Anna Hazare has no possesions except a few clothes and a few other articles of personal use. That he could move millions of Indians to come on the streets, fast with him or express support and remain totally non-violent is amazing. Even small children in nursery began composing rhymes like "Sonia Gandhi (referring to the Chairperson of the ruling coalition) is mummy of corruption."

There could be few better example of power of Non-Violence at work. The concept of Non-Violence emnates from the central theosophical concept of UNITY of all beings, condensed into old Sanskrit verse of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" meaning the entire world is one family. A few days before beginning his fast Anna spoke to his supporters, "Only if you have the capacity to take physical beatings, abuses, insults without generating a thought of retribution in your mind, can you practice Non-Violence". What unites people cannot fail. Theosophy since its inception, has been an attempt to unite.

Anna's campaign is a living example of how deep philosophical truths could be applied to transform lives of millions. Our own Martin Euser would be proud of Anna. So would be Gandhi. Are we?

Are we? Absolutely YES and in fact your statement: "Only if you have the capacity to take physical beatings, abuses, insults without generating a thought of retribution in your mind, can you practice Non-Violence. What unites people cannot fail. Theosophy since its inception, has been an attempt to unite."

This describes my childhood and I grew up to treat people in the ways I believed people ought to be treated. I have the social activism and the scars to show for it but not recognition, appreciation, or respect. Neither has it been socially rewarding and certainly not fiscally so, career wise.

For seeking Truth and the nature of existence.. I have given voice to the abused, institutionalized, and neglected. In other words the unloved. There were many persons who had neither the capacity to understand the meaning of "quality of life, or hope,." but some how they knew Grace entered their life and happiness for their new found peace was my reward. Then I walked away. This was not a moment in time but many different times, over many years.

Once I was threatened by the State Police that "... If you don't shut that big mouth of yours, ..., (the institution was under the jurisdiction of the State, and prior to that I had been brought up on six false charges, following reading a five page letter of the abuse and neglect of individuals who could not defend themselves, which I read at an annual meeting of Federal Judges, Superintendents, and others. I was reinstated after a year with the arbitrator stating; "The charges brought against Mr. O'Lalor were clearly falsified to support the States desire for his termination for speaking out against and for the residents of [*****] the largest institution for persons with Mental Retardation." Eventually I was triumphant after a year.

I was at the time trespassing. However, the State Police officer continued; "...If you don't shut that big mouth of yours your going to find your self on a back ward of [a Mental institution, just up the street], and we'll throw away the key. And If I find you trespassing again I will arrest you and have you prosecuted." I was never so scared in my  life.

Anyway, I was working in tandem with a State Senator and aiding in a covert investigation which found not only violations of Human rights against the clients, but violations of civil rights of the staff; for being threatened with termination if they disclosed information.

So as I left the Police Officer, I had under my arm, documents, reports, and many signatures that I took to the Senator the next morning.

In the end there was mis-management of funds in millions of dollars as well. Oddly enough it feels awfully good to be disliked for the right reasons. Know what I mean? Then I went on to other smaller agencies and did the same thing. Come to think of it I"m very tired; not now; just tired of fighting injustice that never seems to diminish. It's truly saddening the extent of exploitation and abuse in America; the land of the Free? and home of the Brave? What is brave about abusing people who can't defend themselves.? Then adding insult to injury with no laws to protect them but plenty to exploit them.

However, the only thing I really accomplished was being personally responsible for the Senator establishing an office where staff could go to complain of abuse or neglect; not fearing reprisal, and have the incidents actually investigated and acted upon.

Is this an example of Unity and Theosophy in action?

Sincerely,

Peter

Thank You John for this update.

Perhaps you may consider inbuilt feature of Windows 7 called "Windows Fax and Scan". If you are using some other OS, I am sure it may have a similar feature.

Yes, I think both are same numbers. One I got from was Ministry of External Affairs website in India, which is comlpete with international dialling code and the you saw is from the Embassy in Washington with dialling code from within the US.

Government of India has a very funny system, where they create e-mail id with a person's name whereas the id belongs to the post he is holding. Transfer information is rarely updated and once that perosn leaves that post the info sent on that id hardly ever recahes the correct person. So, fax is a better option.
