I'm afraid I have to disagree that this is a "great post." From an intellectual point of view, of moderate interest, but I found it boring, disjointed and certainly uninspiring.

I do agree with you, Joe, that Chalmers hit it "right on the head" - for a reductionist! He's still operating from the mistaken notion that permeates mainstream science - that evolution operates through "blind chance" and that consciousness is an epiphenomena of matter, "complexity of matter," as he would put it.

No sense going through the list of rebuttals, but I will point out that there is a whole other movement in Science and the "New Spirituality" that is taking place. And it's certainly inspiring. The Chopra Foundation is putting on another "Sages and Scientists" Synposiums this coming February 25 - 27th, 2011. It presents "The Merging of a New Future that will explore a series of fantastic emerging facts – the only genuine currency of science – and a contemporary synthesis where science and soul coexist comfortably."

Most likely the members of this site won't be able to attend, but it is good to know that such a movement is taking place and gaining acceptance with some of the brightest lights minds in both arenas.
