Apparently it is the number for Jesus, according to scriptural numerology.   (I looked that up just now.)

Also more googling links the upright lemniscate to L Ron Hubbard of Scientology fame, and there are other references to Alister Crowley and in general the "Black Arts".    Not a path I care to go down really.
