Phoenix Rising Academy

As a new and independent initiative (est. 2010), one of the Phoenix Rising Academy’s greatest priorities is to ensure academic excellence, while filling what its directors and faculty perceive to be a major gap in the Humanities in Western higher education.

Following the pioneers in this field such as Antoine Faivre, Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke and Wouter Hanegraaff among many others, who have established programmes at the Sorbonne, the EXESESO MA and PhD programmes in Western Esotericism at Exeter University, and in the history of Hermetic Philosophy and related currents at the University of Amsterdam,  at Phoenix Rising we seek to continue promoting and disseminating the understanding of the significance of Western Esotericism and related traditions.

Mission Statement

Our Identity, Goals and Objectives

Since our inception, the purpose of Phoenix Rising Academy has been to provide accurate information on Western Esotericism from a variety of perspectives, to those interested parties who were either unable, or unwilling to pursue advanced academic degrees, but who nonetheless wanted to learn more about Western Esotericism and its relationship to wider culture from reliable, documented resources.

Aside from our online courses providing more a more methodical and in-depth introduction to a variety of esoteric concepts, it has become increasingly apparent that there is a demand for more versatile and interactive material and communication. Hence, we are in the process of building Palladion (www.palladion.org currently under construction), a portal that incorporates three main branches:

- Teaching: Our courses and lectures
- Community: Outreach functionality for communication with the general public
- Scholarly: Functionality for scholarly networking and discussion

Each of these three “arms” will, when complete, incorporate resources, online discussion functionality, and various activities and publications aimed at our two main target groups – scholars from other disciplines who are interested in learning more about Western Esotericism as a field, and the general public, also including practitioners and members of esoteric communities who wish to understand more about this field.

Our aim is not to replace or somehow antagonise the extremely important work being done by university-based academic bodies, including the existing departments offering degrees in Western Esotericism and scholarly associations such as ESSWE, ASE, SNASWE, etc, but to complement and support that work at a grass-roots level.
