Local Attractions

Colgate University’s campus is often included in lists of the “most beautiful college campuses in America.” Hamilton Village is a textbook collection of nineteenth-century domestic architecture. The surrounding country is mainly farmland and forest.

As many of you will know, the Upstate region of New York was once a hotbed of eccentric spiritual movements. These included the Shakers, Jemima Wilkinson’s community on Keuka Lake, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) in Palmyra and on the Susquehanna River, William Miller’s apocalyptic movement (later the Adventists), the Ebenezers near Buffalo, Spiritualism’s beginnings in Hydesville, Rochester, and Auburn, John Murray Spear’s Harmonia in Kiantone, Thomas Lake Harris’s Brotherhood of the New Life in Amenia and Brocton, Paschal Beverly Randolph’s early activities in Utica, John Humphrey Noyes’s Oneida Community, the Skaneateles Community and other Fourierist groups, Cyrus Teed’s Koreshan Unity in Utica and Moravia, the Lily Dale Spiritualist camp, Josephine Cables’ Theosophical group in Rochester, the Temple of the People in Syracuse, Elbert Hubbard’s Roycroft in East Aurora, and many others. At the same time, the region was a stronghold of the movements for Women’s Rights, Abolition, and Freethought, the latter exemplified by Cornell University in Ithaca, the first academic institution in America founded on secular principles.

Besides Cornell (70 miles away), the most conspicuous remains of this period are the Shaker villages near Albany and New Lebanon, the Mormon sites in Palmyra, the Women’s Rights National Park in Seneca Falls, the Mansion House of the Oneida Community, and the Roycroft Campus. If there is sufficient demand, we will organize a tour of the Oneida Mansion House on the Sunday afternoon.

Colgate University itself was founded in 1819 as the Baptist Education Society of New York, as Madison University in 1846, and as Colgate University in 1890, honoring the munificence of the Colgate family, of soap manufacturing fame. Among its buildings, Chapel House, a non-denominational center, is well worth a short visit:  www.colgate.edu/about/facilities-at-colgate/chapel-house.

Housing and Dining

Colgate University offers a package for a further $235, which provides the following:

Accommodation for three nights in a private room (shared bathroom).

Eight meals, beginning with breakfast on Friday, June 20, and ending with lunch on Sunday, June 22; also a reception on Thursday evening and incidental refreshments.

Access to university facilities for the duration of the conference. These include the swimming pool, fitness center, library, concerts, and readings.

A Campus Map, available here: http://www.colgate.edu/about/maps/campus-map

shows the location of our four venues: Merrill House (registration, buffet dinner on Thursday, cash bar); West Hall (housing); Frank Dining Hall (dining); and Persson Hall (conference sessions). All are within a few minutes’ walk of each other:

Notes: The $235 package is all-or-nothing; no partial payments are accepted.

The accommodation offered is in West Hall, a student dormitory. The 1827 building is modernized to meet today’s students’ expectations, but is not air-conditioned. Sheets and towels are provided. Bringing or buying a small fan is recommended.

Most meals are taken, self-service style, in Frank Dining Hall, where there is a wide choice to suit most tastes and diets. The banquet will be served in a more private space.

A cash bar opens every evening at 8:30 in Merrill House. There are also bars in Hamilton village, less than one mile away.

Those wishing to stay and eat elsewhere will make their own arrangements, but must pay the university’s facilities fee of $36. Colgate University maintains a list of local hotels, motels, and B&Bs:

During our conference, the university will also be hosting the Colgate Writers’ Conference, which will hold readings, and Kent Music’s string quartet workshop with the Manhattan String Quartet, which will perform a free concert on Friday or Saturday evening. The banquet will be scheduled on the other night.

Travel

Colgate University is located in Hamilton (Madison County), a picturesque village in the Chenango Valley, a few miles from the geographic center of New York State. It is not to be confused with Hamilton College, which is in Clinton (20 miles away).

Driving. Hamilton is about 225 miles from New York City, 45 miles from Syracuse, 65 from Binghamton. The university provides driving directions here:

http://www.colgate.edu/about/maps/directions-to-colgate

Flying and limousine service. The nearest airport is Syracuse’s Hancock International Airport (SYR). Birnie Bus Services provide rides between Hamilton and the airport at the rate of $108 per trip, plus $11 each for the second and third passenger, and no additional charge for passengers four, five, or six. These rides may be arranged directly with the company:

http://www.colgate.edu/about/maps/directions-to-colgate/shuttle-service

As soon as you have booked your flight, please tell us your time of arrival, so that Birnie can group passengers into a smaller number of trips, thus reducing the cost.

‎            Other. Short Line Bus runs twice a day between Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City and the Colgate University campus. The trip takes about 6 hours, with a change in Binghamton. For schedules, see http://www.coachusa.com/shortline/

Amtrak has two trains a day between Penn Station in New York City and Utica (30 miles from Hamilton). Although the route along the Hudson River is beautiful, trains are often delayed and transportation from and to Utica costs almost as much as from Syracuse.

Questions. For questions about payment, housing, and local matters, please address Lorraine Joseph, Administrative Assistant for the conference: ljoseph@colgate.edu

We look forward to welcoming you to Colgate and Hamilton!
