-- -- --
Hard at work now on the second half of my paper for the European School of Theosophy in October on "The Wisdom of H.P. Blavatsky". This half deals with Science. Here is the abstract.

"Madame Blavatsky was the agent of a group of teachers she called the brothers, and on their request formed with others
the Theosophical Society. She conveyed what she was permitted to reveal in many books and articles, gathering pupils for more intense instruction. In recent years there has been a growth of academic scholarship into the work of HPB and her teachers. For Theosophical students, this poses a challenge and an opportunity.

Should we accept what the scholars say? Should we ignore it because it is just exoteric? HPB herself was in constant dialogue with scientists and scholars. In this paper, we examine some recent academic work which can help us understand HPB and her work, but should not be taken
as infallible.

We also look again at Science in relation to Theosophy, and ask whether the hopes of our founders have been
fulfilled, from the time of Olcott’s Inaugural Address in 1875, and K.H.'s statement to Hume in 1882 “Modern science is
our best ally”, through various individuals and groups inside and outside the Theosophical Movement. Finally we identify
where the wisdom of Madame Blavatsky lay."

What a privilege to be present, and also to meet again old colleagues from the Theosophical History conferences.!

Don Degracia's book on Consciousness --
Some of the early participants of theos-l mailing list set up by John Mead may recall Don's postings.

Theosophical Society leaders and their brainwashed followers actively boycotted it and all Internet.

Don has published a book titled
Yogic View of Consciousness two years ago. Found out today.

Apart from the contents of the book, his observations on publications in Internet environment should be of interest to all.

Quoted below is worth reading and help any author or publisher. Enjoy---

Like some of my previous eBooks, The Yogic View of Consciousness was born
as a series of posts on my blog PlaneTalk (https://dondeg.wordpress.com/) which
have been collected as this book and is being released for free into the internet wilds.

The digital PDF is intended to be the main version. It has live links to a variety
of supplemental information, and the Reader is encouraged to take advantage of
these to get additional information. In the Age of the Internet, the conveyance of
information is different. In ancient times (before 1998) we had to use citations.
Now, the internet allows the live linking of information in ways impossible in the
past. Thus, not only do I link to other web pages, but to entire books, to videos on
YouTube, and even to songs whose lyrics add additional overtones to whatever I
might be discussing.

There are also print-on-demand versions available for people who like to hold
real physical books when reading. These cost a nominal fee for the service of
converting the PDF to a book. For those who choose to get a physical book, the
internet links are obviously unavailable. Nonetheless, the book has been designed be stand-alone enough that one can read the text without the links and still fully get
the intended meaning.

There are five “official” versions of the Yogic View of Consciousness being
released:

1. This PDF file. This is the main version intended for wider distribution.
2. The series of blog posts on PlaneTalk, which starts here.
3. Lulu.com standard quality (SQ) version. $39.99. Lulu “standard format” color
printing option is substantially cheaper than the high-quality color printing.
This is a really nice version. It's nice to hold and the color images come out
surprisingly well.
4. EPUB version. $8.99. For tablets, Kindles, etc.
5. Lulu.com high quality (HQ) version. $149.99. This is an expensive, high quality
print option. The pictures are gorgeous though. Compared to my ~100 page
books at $39.99, the pricing is proportional and reflects the fact that Yogic View
of Consciousness is almost 400 pages.
Please go to http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/dondeg to purchase any of my
books.

Finally, as with all my publically-available writings, I encourage you, the Reader,
to get in touch and voice your thoughts and opinions about what I have written.

AsI like to say, fight, flatter, agree, or disagree as you wish. Again, this is the Age ofInternet. We no longer need to sit by as passive absorbers of information, but can
participate in two-way communication with media creators. Therefore, I encourage
Readers to contact me by email, or post comments on PlaneTalk. Each chapter has
its own comment section on my blog where you can post and share your thoughts.

The comments that have accumulated since posting the Yogic View of Consciousness provide an interesting on-going discussion that supplements the text, and you are invited to join in.

Yoga has become an integral part of the Western way of life. The assimilation is
by no means complete. I hope my small contribution can add something to the
ongoing assimilation of yoga into Western culture, to the ongoing rediscovery of the
depth of ancient thought, and to the ongoing fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.

John Mead Don went to TSA (TS America) and gave a talk about the Internet in the 90's. I think he was the first person to actually address the subject with TSA leadership. It was a tough job. I recall/believe that only after that talk did TSA start a serious IT program. Any corrections/additions to my recollections are welcome comments. Don may have written about that experience.

excerpt:

In order to acknowledge that esotericism played an important role in the global religious history of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the current academic paradigm of a purely “Western Esotericism” requires revision. The conference will try to bring together Western Esotericism Studies and Asian Area Studies and, equally importantly, draw in contributions from other disciplines, especially History, Literary Studies, and Art History. By not just narrowly focusing on theosophy and the usual suspects thought to have been its main agents, the goal of the conference is to contextualize theosophy as a global movement, to take effects upon theosophy and effects of theosophy in unlikely places into account, and to go across (disciplinary) borders just as theosophy has also transgressed them historically.

ASE-2014 at Colgate University

The conference registration link is now up—please read the information below, and then click on Conference Registration in the navigation bar, or you can scroll down this page to “Registration.”

The Fifth International Conference of the Association for the Study of Esotericism will be held June 19-22, 2014 at Colgate University, located in Hamilton, New York. Below you will find information on the locale, registration, housing, dining, and travel arrangements.

Local Attractions

Colgate University’s campus is often included in lists of the “most beautiful college campuses in America.” Hamilton Village is a textbook collection of nineteenth-century domestic architecture. The surrounding country is mainly farmland and forest.

As many of you will know, the Upstate region of New York was once a hotbed of eccentric spiritual movements. These included the Shakers, Jemima Wilkinson’s community on Keuka Lake, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) in Palmyra and on the Susquehanna River, William Miller’s apocalyptic movement (later the Adventists), the Ebenezers near Buffalo, Spiritualism’s beginnings in Hydesville, Rochester, and Auburn, John Murray Spear’s Harmonia in Kiantone, Thomas Lake Harris’s Brotherhood of the New Life in Amenia and Brocton, Paschal Beverly Randolph’s early activities in Utica, John Humphrey Noyes’s Oneida Community, the Skaneateles Community and other Fourierist groups, Cyrus Teed’s Koreshan Unity in Utica and Moravia, the Lily Dale Spiritualist camp, Josephine Cables’ Theosophical group in Rochester, the Temple of the People in Syracuse, Elbert Hubbard’s Roycroft in East Aurora, and many others. At the same time, the region was a stronghold of the movements for Women’s Rights, Abolition, and Freethought, the latter exemplified by Cornell University in Ithaca, the first academic institution in America founded on secular principles.

Besides Cornell (70 miles away), the most conspicuous remains of this period are the Shaker villages near Albany and New Lebanon, the Mormon sites in Palmyra, the Women’s Rights National Park in Seneca Falls, the Mansion House of the Oneida Community, and the Roycroft Campus. If there is sufficient demand, we will organize a tour of the Oneida Mansion House on the Sunday afternoon.

Colgate University itself was founded in 1819 as the Baptist Education Society of New York, as Madison University in 1846, and as Colgate University in 1890, honoring the munificence of the Colgate family, of soap manufacturing fame. Among its buildings, Chapel House, a non-denominational center, is well worth a short visit: www.colgate.edu/about/facilities-at-colgate/chapel-house.

We look forward to seeing you at Colgate in June, 2014.

Housing and Dining

Colgate University offers a package for a further $235, which provides the following:

Accommodation for three nights in a private room (shared bathroom).

Eight meals, beginning with breakfast on Friday, June 20, and ending with lunch on Sunday, June 22; also a reception on Thursday evening and incidental refreshments.

Access to university facilities for the duration of the conference. These include the swimming pool, fitness center, library, concerts, and readings.

A Campus Map, available here: http://www.colgate.edu/about/maps/campus-map

shows the location of our four venues: Merrill House (registration, buffet dinner on Thursday, cash bar); West Hall (housing); Frank Dining Hall (dining); and Persson Hall (conference sessions). All are within a few minutes’ walk of each other:

Notes: The $235 package is all-or-nothing; no partial payments are accepted.

The accommodation offered is in West Hall, a student dormitory. The 1827 building is modernized to meet today’s students’ expectations, but is not air-conditioned. Sheets and towels are provided. Bringing or buying a small fan is recommended.

Most meals are taken, self-service style, in Frank Dining Hall, where there is a wide choice to suit most tastes and diets. The banquet will be served in a more private space.

A cash bar opens every evening at 8:30 in Merrill House. There are also bars in Hamilton village, less than one mile away.

Those wishing to stay and eat elsewhere will make their own arrangements, but must pay the university’s facilities fee of $36. Colgate University maintains a list of local hotels, motels, and B&Bs:

http://www.colgate.edu/about/maps/hotels-and-accommodations

During our conference, the university will also be hosting the Colgate Writers’ Conference, which will hold readings, and Kent Music’s string quartet workshop with the Manhattan String Quartet, which will perform a free concert on Friday or Saturday evening. The banquet will be scheduled on the other night.

Travel

Colgate University is located in Hamilton (Madison County), a picturesque village in the Chenango Valley, a few miles from the geographic center of New York State. It is not to be confused with Hamilton College, which is in Clinton (20 miles away).

Driving. Hamilton is about 225 miles from New York City, 45 miles from Syracuse, 65 from Binghamton. The university provides driving directions here:

http://www.colgate.edu/about/maps/directions-to-colgate

Flying and limousine service. The nearest airport is Syracuse’s Hancock International Airport (SYR). Birnie Bus Services provide rides between Hamilton and the airport at the rate of $108 per trip, plus $11 each for the second and third passenger, and no additional charge for passengers four, five, or six. These rides may be arranged directly with the company:

http://www.colgate.edu/about/maps/directions-to-colgate/shuttle-service

As soon as you have booked your flight, please tell us your time of arrival, so that Birnie can group passengers into a smaller number of trips, thus reducing the cost.

Other. Short Line Bus runs twice a day between Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City and the Colgate University campus. The trip takes about 6 hours, with a change in Binghamton. For schedules, see http://www.coachusa.com/shortline/

Amtrak has two trains a day between Penn Station in New York City and Utica (30 miles from Hamilton). Although the route along the Hudson River is beautiful, trains are often delayed and transportation from and to Utica costs almost as much as from Syracuse.

Questions. For questions about payment, housing, and local matters, please address Lorraine Joseph, Administrative Assistant for the conference: ljoseph@colgate.edu

We look forward to welcoming you to Colgate and Hamilton!
