Above all, beware of compromises. Hold on to your own principles in weal or woe and never adjust them to others’ fads through the greed of getting supporters. Your Atman is the support of the universe. Whose support do you stand in need of?

-- Vivekananda

One has to compromise in order to govern people. However - Vivekananda is referring to the individual's self spirituality, or so it seems.

What stood out to me is more of a self reliance of sorts (with discernment). Standing true to your self along with your support of the universe (Atman).

But the question posed "Whose support do you stand in need of?" is quite the one for reflection!

elegantly said!

So the advice that I get from this, is to stand strong amongst those that you wish
to 'please'. More importantly, if looking at this in reference to the self; not
compromising what you know to be true and accept falsities before discernment in
order to have self acceptance or please the ego, keep from falling into a
contradictory acceptance of man, recognition from those that do not feed your
greater purpose, or that which gives no seed to the principle of man.  Your Atman is the support of the universe.  Those who compromise their truths weaken the structure of the Atman for selfish gain or for anothers.
Metaphorically speaking, it's like erasing an unwritten story, or one that you
have already written only to gain passage in another persons book.

Just an opinion :) Well, more like some thoughts..

Above all, beware of compromises. I do not mean that you are to get into antagonism with anybody, but you have to hold on to your own principles in weal or woe and never adjust them to others fads thought the greed of getting supporters.
