I must first thank you for the elaborate dissection of the esoteric conception of reincarnation. Do you mean to say that the encapsulated physical system itself is continually inhabited by an evolving ego? Such that death is only a disintegrative stage but not the only stage whereby a spiritual event (such as reincarnation) occurs? If I have this correctly, you suggest that as the process of "eternal life" unfolds, the physical periphery of an ego and the constructions it upholds cognitively are changed and such major changes are called names like reincarnation or death.

Ego-consciousness can never evolve it is the soul's/psyche's character that regresses or evolves similar to a seesaw throughout eternity. Ego-consciousness is essentially the individual's identity. It is this that dissipates from the soul/psyche upon death in order for the soul/psyche to be rebirthed tabula rasa: meaning blank slate in order to develope a new ego-consciousness.

The only purpose for life is to be enjoyed and experienced for there is no other purpose for life.

Consider the trillions of life times lived and the trillions of life times yet to be experienced. There is no way that a rebirthed soul/psyche would want to retain any conscious memory of past lives because this would clutter up the brand new life about to be lived.

Whereas, the character of the individual does get carried over to the new experience because what each soul/psyche does in the present life experience is building the next life experience.

There are what are known as spiritual laws, which when obeyed anul the Karmic effects of the character and when life becomes too burdensome it is the soul/psyche only avenue of escape so to speak. Spirituality is a revitalization process, which allows the soul/psyche to know the laws of life: KNOW THYSELF.

One last point here is that there is no physical reality: all is lived in the soul/psyche; all else is an illusion of consciousness.

Maybe it would be helpful at this point to draw the distinction between 'ego-consciousness' and 'soul/psyche.' As I see it, when a being attains consciousness (self-awareness), what is known in the Freudian/Jungian conception of "ego" is attained. It is the image which a being holds as representing himself (his aspirations, desires, limits, states of being etc.). The psyche in Jungian terms (derived from Greek root meaning life), may be defined in the esoteric sense as the "breath of life" as expressed in the word spirit (meaning breath). As such, the psyche is the vital mental force which sets a conscious being into active experience. Under this elaboration of the terminology, it seems the claim Mr. Michael is putting forth goes like this "reincarnation as a concept could not come to be demonstrated tangibly as the 'reincarnated' soul does not seek to maintain its prior experiences in its yearning for revitalization" or "the revitalization process itself necessitates the shedding of the former ego's skin."

For me there is a great distinction between ego-consciousness, which is obtain some years after birth. The child begins to develop it in its early years, whereas, the soul/psyche is tabula rasa at conception and basically the personity of the present life is already formulated at birth, which the child tries to develop consciously in its formative years.

Thus at birth this ego-consciousness literally fades from the soul/psyche much like a mirage and this is seen in dreams where you as the dreamer seems to have a different persona in every dream. Ego-consciousness must submit to the collective unconscious: the primordial reality, in order to go into REM sleep. Without the ego-consciousness submitting to a higher power it can not rest and will drive itself insane.

Just as your clothes get dirty and needs washing so the soul/psyche get cleanse after death as if the dust (ego-consciousness) of Adam has returned to the earth.

The essense of an individual is his soul/psyche and this can not die but it is wiped clean of all experience in a previous life: tabula rasa.

Because I am a Catholic I hone all my energies toward understanding life through its teachings and symbolism. This does not mean that Catholocism has a monopoly on the truth of life. Catholocism is a member of a Choir that spans the globe.

I recently finished a chaper on Chartres Cathedral where I demonstrate the whys and wherefores of it construct from an esoteric point of view.. Basically Chartres Cathedral is a commentary on the first word of Genesis: BERESHITH.

I am beginning to think that it may be best for me to download each of these chapers to this forum in the blog section. I am giving that serious thought and will make up my mind in the next few months.

I hope you enjoy reading those suggestions I mentioned above.

Yes and no. I am aware of some past life connections and know how to consult the akashic record, but rarely do. When I have it was to understand relationships with particular people in this lifetime which has been quite helpful.

Perhaps I should do so more often to learn why I have some of the experiences I do yet have rarely felt the "urge" to do so. On the other hand I am, however, quite aware of karma and try to avoid it as much as possible by working on the thoughts that give rise to volition, the source of karma ... I'll admit that this is a challenge when one is not sequestered in a temple or monestary and lives in the busy, noisy and hectic modern world.

I think that awareness of karma is the one aspect that can be of significant help to most people though that said, I often disagree with some pretty knowledgeable people about just what karma is (ex. I do not believe in good karma and bad karma.... just karma which includes both).

Anyways, that's my thoughts as briefly as I can manage :)

related. If it is okay, I will number them, as I may reply to one or another, perhaps others might too”

Should we really think about reincarnation?
In what way it is better for me if I am born as an ant or an elephant, a prince or a pauper, a Joe Fulton, Susan Thomas, Anand or a beggar dying on the street ?
I will simply follow what has been given to me. Why is it important in life to have achievements?
Is there a social or political angle to the concept of reincarnation?
Is the concept really consistent with 'One LIfe' principle?
I have struggled with these questions for long. Gradually I am beginning to find one of the tenets of Kashmir Shaivism that knowledge itself is an impediment to progress, more acceptable.
Yet the question remains, who finds that tenet more acceptable? Anand or some reincarnated being?

To 1. I would say definitely yes. However, if one has never had the basis in their belief system to consider life after death, and concurrent existences, then it may have no significance. If one DOES have exposure to some kind of belief in the hereafter, then to NOT HAVE THIS would be like sudden death, and therefore it evokes fear.

Speaking to the affirmative approach, I think it most valuable to be able to see my existences as I have my overall life growing up … the sequence of frames allows me to understand my progress, my velocity, my volition, my objectives, my expectations from existence.

Another way the affirmative has meaning is that it underscores the concept of hope. Many people do not progress gracefully, happily or successfully. After a certain age, complacency, circumstances and even age itself induces a kind of futility to life. It is comforting to know we can accept our circumstances and do the best we can in our situation, and have HOPE for a better future existence. Too, this is a means that supports “forgiveness.”

Much I have just said has greater meaning for one who has grown up with Religion.

Regardless, the thoughts themselves help condition us to thinking BEYOND (in both directions) our current life-term, something difficult to do without a Reincarnation concept to embrace.

You may feel it an escape from our responsibility to our current life … I would rather think that it underscores a certainty that IN TIME, we will all reach a perfect conclusion.

I would rather take those toughts of responsibility and consider that Reincarnation and Karma, the laws of retribution or of cause and effect go hand-in-hand.

Thank You Christian, for the informed reply and for organizing my questions. Your mind thinks with far more clarity and organization than mine.

I will join question numbers 1 & 5 together. If one believes in one life, then is it possible to view different reincarnations as progression from dream to waking to dream and waking again and so on? It is an everyday affair. Why bother? Some days are different from others. Few days bring us joy, others pain. We take all that in our stride and continue. Is it really that important?

Such question was originally posed in the ancient Indian text Mandukya Upanishad and dealt with some finesse by Sri Krishna in Bhagvad-Gita Chapter 2 Verse 22.

And yes, in spite of being born into the family of deeply religious people, due to perhaps a defective gene, I could never be religious, even in my childhood. One of the earliest memories of my childhood is waiting for nearly four hours outside the revered hindu temple of Shiva at Varanasi, while my parents, brothers, sisters and other members prayed inside. I never took part in any family religious rituals. I must add here that my parents tolerated this and never forced me towards religion which they considered as their duty. So, I cannot think like a religious person.

Amongst the finest treatise written on Mandukya Upanishad is one by Swami Sri Rama titled, Enlightenment Without God.

I see karma is the consequence of volition, that is an action of the "I". Whether that volition leads to what people refer to as good or bad karma it is fundamentally the consequence of volition. For example, say I walking down the sidewalk on my way to work and I see a man who has fallen and hurt himself. Further, let us say that I am prejudiced against the race the person who has fallen is AND he is unclean and bleeding. I see this man and think "I don't have time to help him, I don't like his type, he could bleed on me... I could be late for work" BUT I decide to help him anyways and do. This action leads to what some would call good karma. I simply say it leads to karma. Now, let's take the same situation but when I see the person this time I do not hesitate to go to his aid. I never think about how I could be late for work or of his race or that he could bleed on me. I just act without thinking.... for this action there is no karma.

Does this help explain my perspective, Christian?
