Is there a way of life that we can adopt?

Regulating one’s own life is what we do when we understand things in a right perspective.  Knowledge and updating one’s understanding each day, changing one’s attitudes and opinions, based on experience obtained, is also known to us. Sometimes we may think that there is nothing in our nature that needs a change. Scriptural knowledge comes to our aid in our understanding.  It is not necessary to take it as an ‘authority’, but consideration as to its utility and its contextual examination is necessary.

A preliminary understanding of human nature, its processes, relationship with others, as well as Nature, is the basic need.  Non-personal observation and non-judgmental attitude in daily living is helpful.  These days, terms such as Yoga and Meditation have gained much currency and are advocated for practice. Words do not mean the same thing to all, cannot even describe the total meaning of the term. Much is left to imagination, reflection and deeper consideration.

Yoga and Meditation are normally associated with religion and philosophy. Now, science is also giving currency to the practices of yoga and meditation.  Life is enjoyed in layers and levels. Mind plays a conspicuous role in life. Our life is lived in many planes of nature, not just at the  physical level. We consciously or unconsciously live in three worlds, physical, emotional and intellectual. There is need to obtain coordination among these three levels. There can be higher laws of life and they ought to be adopted if the life is to become Total and Blissful. We see competition and comparison playing vital role. We often say, the world is full of competition and unless we acquire skill to be on the top we cannot survive.  These views require a close analysis.  No knowledge could be a proprietary theme of a particular group.

Friendliness is a quality natural to us. But we come across many enemies, named and unnamed, known and unknown. There can be no external enemy; our internal nature may breed certain traits that are inimical to the basic nature.  Not knowing about them, it is possible we wage wars against life, its situation and events. We may build a life that is not compatible with the Compassion we ought to contain and carry with us.

Realizing that there is much gross/crude nature associated with us and cultivating subtler aspects of culture and enlightenment would make our life well congenial and comfortable. There has to be Reverence to Life and we have to assume responsibility for life. We must be prepared to share our life, our knowledge with others. No one’s life is solitary. We are part of a net work of relationships and/or a web of Life.  We are tiny constituents of One Globe.

Developing humaneness and moving up the level of Divinity is natural sequence of our life. We have the potential for such orientation. Initially, it may need some practice coupled by conviction. As the adage is, it is only ‘constant practice’ that makes us ‘perfect’. Perfection is a mark of divinity. Humanity, essentially a constituent of divinity, can flower in the Divine Garden. We are designed for that, may be growing in the direction unconsciously; yet we can do that consciously and help the Nature.

All too often free sharing is due to the graciousness of the copyright holders who decide not to prosecute or issue a take down order. However, I have noticed an increasing number of removal of items on Google and YouTube lately where previously available material is being removed and I have heard that there are legal firms who make a living scanning the net looking for illegal downloads, so be careful what you decide to take, the owners may not see it quite in the same light as you do.

Thanks MKR. There is a cafe' in New Delhi where one can pay whatever amount one likes or chose not to pay at all. It has been running very successfully for the last 4 years. I believe we will see more and more of such sharing in the coming decades as the economic crisis forces us to rethink on the co-operatives and sharing. What you are proposing does have the potential to become a very good model. All spiritualists must take lead in this.

scribd.com site is not free. I wish some other spiritual site hosted it. Many sites will not host it because of copyright issues.

Many years ago, many software authors tried the shareware model. Software is provided free. Users can give a donation. Most users are fair and do send in varying amounts of money. No one has tried it on spiritual books. This would put food on the table. Worth trying.

Some of the important recent publications, including the HPB commentaries is priced out of reach to most interested in theosophy, especially in less developed countries. This is not acceptable if the aim of any theosophist is to spread theosophy and help our fellow men and women. The flip side is the collision between copyrighted works and low cost high speed scanners. Once scanned, the files are bound to migrate to other students. In my own case, I bought the two volume collected writings and they are too heavy to lug around when you travel and want to study. I converted them to pdf files for my personal use in two evenings. They are searchable too. Current growing generation is computer savvy and future is in digital world. Current publishing model was ok till digital revolution came along. The really old theosophists who are in decision making positions in organizations cannot see what is coming and future generation is going to demand electronic copies. It will be fun to watch how the whole issue evolves.

MK and Capt. Anand you are welcome, but it was Kirk Walker who found the link and anyone who cannot afford the book should be particularly grateful to him. For many people, perhaps those mostly on the theosophical line, this book could be a life-changer. I might also mention that there is much important information in Geoffrey Hodson's other posthumous books particularly The Yogic Ascent to Spiritual Heights and Illuminations of the Mystery Tradition. These revelations came about by virtue of two main factors: 1) Geoffrey Hodson was a fully yogically illumined human being whose mission particularly lay in the Western World, where it was presented to Westerners in a way in which they could understand and 2) He was a confidant of many members of the Adept Brotherhood and also the Angelic Hosts - he therefore had direct access to information beyond ordinary intellectual and speculative study. To say any more than that would probably be superfluous. Those who are hungry for this type of information will seek it out avidly, those who are not, will go along their own preferred line.

The subject of cost is of minor importance in a way, virtually anyone can get access to these books in one way or another, even through a library. For those who are really intent on wisdom one could put the argument, can you afford not to know of the contents of such books? Both The Theosophical Society and Geoffrey Hodson toiled ceaselessly for human regeneration and gave much information freely to the world. Geoffrey deserted a profitable business career to spread Theosophy far and wide and all he had for his income were the royalties from his books, which paid his bills, but by no means made him a wealthy man. He did not charge money for consultations and he did not charge for his lectures and research work. That is what intellectual property rights should really be for - to protect the income stream of the author or artist. I feel in this day and age copyright law is very much too draconian, and the fair usage component should be higher. However, I acknowledge that there will always be some freeloaders who abuse concessions and that is probably why the laws are tilted in the favour of the owners of intellectual property. But, certainly I do not acknowledge that The Theosophical Society or Geoffrey Hodson had any case to answer in this respect - the history of both the organization and the individual have been that of very great selfless ministry to the world.

MKR, I was told by a leading theosopher that Adyar loses money every time they print a book since there is a huge gap between minimum print quantity and the number of orders. As our esteemed member Dr. Ramanujachary himself will testify, our efforts to engage with them to digitize the entire library came to naught. Digitization of books is the cheapest way of preserving them too. One can only hope someday situation will improve. I deeply appreciate and support your continuous effort to bring this issue to the fore.

I would very much like to see theosophical organization make the pdf available for free. There is also a companion two volume publication of the collected writings of Hodson which was published in Phillipines. The volumes are 1000 pages each and very voluminous to handle. A pdf file is small and you can take it with you when you travel. Recent experience with theosophical publications is that they have no interest in making valuable material in pdf format. While I understand there are costs involved in publishing, in cases like HPB discussion notes recently published, the originals could have been scanned and made available online and every one of us could have helped to transcribe for free. The published volume is out of reach for most middle class theosophists, which the publishers seem to be blind to. It is a pity. Thanks again for you efforts.

Many thanks to you Bill and Kirk for providing this link.

Well MK and other interested parties, here it is and kind acknowledgements to Mr. Kirk Walker who found the link to the pdf file for Light of the Sanctuary - The Occult Diary of Geoffrey Hodson. Now, nobody who is interested in the process of how you go from an ordinary human being to an illumined servant of humanity can any longer claim ignorance of the mechanism whereby this is brought about. Do bear in mind that the information contained herein about The Path and access to it was relatively secret information until Mdme. Blavatsky's great revelation in the 19th Century. Geoffrey Hodson, as you will read in the Occult Diary was the latest Theosophical agent and representative of that tradition, a lineage that is actually being established along theosophical lines. Good luck to you who see the relevance of the information to your own lives:
