Anyone have any ideas on what "Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live." (Exodus 33:20) means?

That is pretty close to my own view. To me "God" and "Truth" are the same thing. The Bible tells us we are born in sin, only it doesn't just mean humanity, it means our whole universe is born in sin. The only sin possible is that of "not-truth" or lie. Because our physical universe is born of a lie or not-truth, if faced with the "Truth" or "God", it would unravel the lie that is literally holding us together.

If one were to truly lay eyes on the raw Infinite/God/the Real, the "person" (i.e. the ego) would no longer still be "alive," as it would have evaporated in light of its newfound unreality. The spiritual directive that one must "die" before one literally dies is universal.
